Parsley flowers and basil leaves… šŸŒæ

Left to themselves, the basil and parsley I planted when summer began have been relishing the rain and heat and are on a rampage to take over the vegie patch in the backyard. No fertiliser or pesticides, just tucked under the protection of netting propped up by an old mop handle (a nod to Nonno Anni!) 😘

The basil leaves overwhelmed the basket when I picked them. They appear just bursting with greenness and their fresh, strident fragrance filled the kitchen, and then the whole house it seemed. So, of course, it could only be pesto per cena, made the old way by mortar and pestle (thanks to Roger’s arm muscles!)

I usually love pairing orecchiette with basil pesto but there was none in the pantry so it had to be a mix of leftover fettuccine and pappardelle this time. Meanwhile, the pretty parsley flowers are dropping their seeds and more parsley is growing so it may be time for a parsley dish next, I think! Love the greenness of summer.     I live on the South West Slopes of NSW and I too have an abundance of basil. Just love it. Last year was the same, when I made heaps of pesto. Some I gave away and the rest I froze. Not sure if freezing pesto works. For some reason my parsley doesn’t do so well.

    • Hello Judith, I must admit, it’s potluck in the vegie patch here and this year all the heat and rain in Brisbane have made the basil and parsley very happy it seems. I haven’t tried freezing basil pesto before though it’s a good idea with it in abundance (over on my Facebook page an Italian woman told me she has done so too so I’m sure it would be fine). Those who you gave some away to are certainly very lucky! (By the way, I know the South West Slopes of NSW as my husband comes from the very area.) Have a lovely day! Zoe x
